A visit to the Islander, thirty six years later
The Islander has been put out of service for the Steamship Authority, and now sits at the repair facility in Fairhaven. I was fortunate enough to invited aboard, to see the old vessel one last time. It was quite a trip, especially down into the galley, where I had worked in the summer of 1971 as messman. The galley looked a lot smaller than I remembered. The boat was definitley looking a bit old, but as I looked at the top deck, with all those chairs looking our, all I could think of were the countless generations who had travelled to the Vineyard in the vessel.
These stairs are exactly as steep as I remember.
Y'know, I never thought the Islander was a pretty boat, but the new Island Home is just incredibly ugly compared to her... Funny how time has a way of changing how things look.
