Portland, Maine

Portland is a
wonderful town. My friends Dave and Suzie Perry moved there many years ago, so I
have had the opportunity to visit a number of times.
One of my favorite
visits is to the Maine Boatbuilder's show, usually in March. Portland has a busy
working waterfront, and is a great place to sail. The city has many historic
buildings, and a busy cultural life as well, with symphony and museums.
Many years ago
Dave and I took a Cape Dory 28 all the way from Newport Rhode Island to
Georgetown Maine. It was an amazing trip. The first night we just cleared
Newport when darkness began to fall. It was quite stormy, and the lights from
the shores of Buzzards Bay would disappear each time we fell into a trough. We
made it to Pocasset the first night, and then pushed on the next morning, in
spite of the continued rough weather. We hugged the shore as we powered past
Boston and points north, with large swells, we took turns navigating the boat.
We made it as far as Portland that night, and were on fumes as we pulled in
with the darkness of a September evening coming up on us quickly. We refueled
and made Robinhood Marine the next morning. A memorable trip.
