For each new
morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
-
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

The other day I noticed a Baltimore
Oriole flying by. Yesterday I saw the Oriole fly by again (they are a
bright orange), and then noticed that there was a nest in the tree next to the
porch! The nest was like a cocoon, it hangs from the tree like a big sack. I
heard noises, and then noticed a baby Oriole perched on a tree limb. Over the
period of the day the bird moved a bit further away from the nest, then even
further. It was cute in an ugly kind of way, with feathers sticking from the
baby birds head, like he had not combed his hair..
That night the birds were gone, back into the nest I assume.
This morning I was on the porch, looked up to see the bottom of the nest open
up, and two birds fall out. It was about a twenty foot fall to the grass below.
One bird just started to fly before it hit the ground. The other did not, and
just landed on the grass. The mother Oriole was in the tree.
I checked on the baby bird a few times, he did not move. I eventually went to
see if he was alive. He moved a little, so I picked him up. He started screaming
very loudly (a lot of noise for such a little
bird). As soon as the screaming started I was surprised to see the adult
Oriole swoop at me, then noticed there were two orioles in the tree, and looking
quite closely at what I was doing. I put the bird back down in the grass. An
hour later all the birds were gone, including the baby on the tree and the one
in the grass. Early this evening I heard the birds again, I think in the nest
because I could not see them.
